Risk, law and places for play workshop
This workshop is delivered 'in-house'. It:
- uses the content of the risk assessment for play providers
- shares and discusses the PLAYLINK commissioned legal advice in respect of risk and play
- presents with commentry the Places of Woe: Places of Possibility Exhibition and uses it as a platform to discuss how to make better places for play across settings, supervised and unsupervised
“The common law supports the proposition that a balancing exercise needs to be undertaken in deciding whether, in the event of accident, there was a breach of duty. Risk of injury is an important part of that balance, but the cases support the proposition that the utility of the activity is also important.”
Raymond Machell QC
The workshop explores how attitudes and anxieties about risk affect so many aspects of decision-making in respect of play, for example:
- the design of play places - supervised and unsupervised
- creation of self-induced 'artificial scarcity' in play budgets
- modes of supervision whether in adventure playgrounds, out of school club or school playground.
This workshop is designed to stimulate discussion - possibly disagreement, too. We aim to cover a fairly wide territory and respond to the interests and concerns of each particular workshop participant group.
“What a brilliant photographic exhibition. I have forwarded on to many others.”
Mel Chandler - Play Development worker - Montgomeryshire
